Mattress break in period

A brand new mattress needs a break-in period because the materials have not had time to soften and conform to your body.

The old mattress you’ve been sleeping on for years has adjusted to your body size, shape, and sleeping positions. After years of repeated use, “breaking in” turns into “breaking down” as your mattress materials compress or degrade and no longer support your weight properly. The indentation left by your body may actually create sagging and permanent indentations near the end of the mattress’ life.

Be patient

The materials in a new mattress are flexible, but strong and rigid. Like buying a new pair of shoes, they might feel uncomfortable at first because the materials have not become flexible and moldable with repeated use. The same thing applies to a bed; it may not feel completely comfortable until the materials have stretched and softened.

Let it adjust to you (and you to it)

If your old sleeping surface was beginning to break down, your body may have overcompensated to make you feel comfortable. A new sleeping surface means your body may have to readjust to the support of your new mattress.

If your new mattress is made with different materials than your old one, certain sensations with these materials may feel strange at first. For example, the switch from memory foam to an innerspring mattress might increase the transfer of your sleeping partner’s movements; whereas the switch from innerspring to memory foam can initially make you feel warmer than you're used to while you sleep.

It's essential for long-term enjoyment

Initial discomfort is not unusual. But after the break-in process, you will feel different about your new mattress. This adjustment period may be inconvenient when you want to enjoy sleeping on a new mattress right away, but it is also necessary to make sure you don’t judge a mattress by a few nights' sleep, as the feel can improve significantly during the break-in period.

Product Care

Can I wash my mattress?

The top cover on LOTUS mattresses is machine washable:

  • Unzip the top cover
  • Wash in cold or warm water on delicate setting
  • To prevent colour transfer from other laundry, wash the cover on its own
  • Hang to dry or tumble dry on low heat

To avoid the risk of spills, stains, and other unwanted surprises damaging your mattress, purchase a mattress protector.

How often should I rotate my mattress?

Our mattresses should be rotated every 4–6 months, especially if there is a significant weight difference between the people who use the bed.

To rotate a mattress, turn the mattress 180 degrees (making the head of the bed the foot of the bed). Rotating a mattress allows the surface to recover from prolonged body indentations. This will help the longevity of the mattress.

Can I wash my weighted blanket?

You can wash any LOTUS blanket in cold water on delicate mode.

We recommend spot-cleaning the inner weighted blanket if it is always used with a cover, but it can also go in the wash alone if your washer is strong enough.

Both should be hang-dried for maximum quality and longevity of the blanket.

Covid 19

At our head office and manufacturing facilities across Canada, we've instituted increased hand-washing and wipe-down procedures and implemented work-from-home policies where possible. We continue to follow recommendations as they are issued by the Canadian government.

As for production, minimal contact is involved in the manufacturing process. Our mattresses are machine-packed in airtight, vacuum-sealed plastic prior to shipping, and contactless delivery is standard. We hope your in-home, 100-night sleep trial gives you a safe space to decide on whether your new mattress meets your needs.

Purchase, Shipping and Delivery

Do you offer financing?

Yes. Interest-free financing through PayBright is available at checkout for all orders above $250 after taxes.

Do you ship to PO boxes or rural addresses?

Due to the oversized nature of our packages, we can't guarantee delivery to PO boxes. If you'd like to ensure the seamless delivery of your order, put a property location in the Shipping Address section at checkout.

For rural destinations, Purolator or FedEx will often tender your packages to a local courier for final delivery. If this occurs, your Purolator or FedEx estimated delivery date will no longer be updated. If a week has passed from this scan and you still don't have your items, please reach out to our customer care team.

How much does shipping cost?

Shipping is free to most locations throughout Canada, though we do charge a shipping fee for certain remote or rural areas on some items.

If you would like a shipping estimate or have questions about whether a shipping fee applies to your location, please reach out to our customer care team.

Do I have to be home to accept delivery?

No, you don't have to be home to accept your order, as a signature is not typically required in most locations. To find out if there are any exceptions that apply to your location, please contact us.

Please note: A signature is required for deliveries in Quebec, as well as orders paid with PayBright or PayPal.

When will my mattress arrive?

All our mattresses are made to order. This means we can guarantee you'll receive a fresh new mattress, and not one that's been sitting and slowly deteriorating in a warehouse for months.

Use this guide to estimate how long it will take to deliver your mattress after it's been manufactured and shipped:

  • Business days don't include weekends or public holidays.
  • For a more precise shipping time estimate to your location, please reach out to our customer care team.

What happens if my mattress arrives damaged?

If you discover that your new mattress has arrived damaged, contact our customer care team immediately.

Please note: It’s normal for the mattress bag to arrive with signs of wear and tear. This typically does not affect the mattress, which is protected inside the bag with additional heavy-duty packaging, and should be in excellent condition inside the plastic.

Should I keep the packaging?

Yes. After you carefully cut open the packaging, save the plastic in a safe place until you know that the mattress is the right one for you.

If you need to return the mattress, slide it into the plastic packaging it arrived in. The mattress will fit inside even once it has expanded. All of our mattress returns must be wrapped in plastic on the day of return pickup.

Already threw away the plastic? You can buy an inexpensive plastic mattress bag online or from a hardware store or moving van rental agency. Plastic sheeting for painting also works well.

Sleep Trials Returns

The 100-night home sleep trial is your satisfaction guarantee that comes with the purchase of your mattress. Starting the day your new mattress arrives, you’ll have 100 nights to sleep on it and get to know it.

It does take time to get used to a new sleep surface, and we want to make sure you fully experience your mattress before making a final decision. We ask that customers sleep on their mattress for a minimum of 30 nights before initiating a return.

More info: Why can't I return the mattress until 30 days after delivery?

If you choose to return your mattress, contact customer care to initiate the return. We'll need a few images of the mattress to confirm its condition for our charity partners, and then we'll schedule pickup based on your availability. Once the pickup is confirmed, your refund will be issued.

Company

The name may be new, but LOTUS is one of the pioneers of the sleep products industry.

We may have humble beginnings but we’ve always dreamed big. Our founders weren’t just after creating a better mattress, they wanted to start a sleep revolution. Based in the prairies, our co-founder, spent many months combining the best high-performance foams and textiles from Canada’s top manufacturers, and the results are breathtaking: we have created one of Canada’s best sleep systems.

We wanted to bring the best sleep of your life to you and make it a decision that you wouldn’t lose any sleep over.

Unboxing & Setup

Setup is fast and easy:

  • Carry the reusable canvas bag with a friend or family member to your bedroom.
  • Unzip the bag, lay it sideways, and slide out the vacuum-packed bag.
  • Place the bag on an approved base and cut away the outer plastic wrap.
  • Unroll the flattened mattress to its resting position (you may need to flip the mattress).
  • Cut away the inner plastic wrap and slide it off. The mattress will begin to decompress.

Leave at least 30 minutes for the mattress to decompress before sleeping on it for the first night; its full, intended comfort will be reached after 24 hours.

Keep the plastic bag until your 100-night sleep trial is complete. If you decide to return the mattress, it will need to be placed back in the bag for return pickup.
